Gary Higgs claimed round 3 of the SSRC Super Sedan Summer Series after a dominant performance in the 25-lap feature race at Albany’s Attwell Park on Saturday night in front of a huge crowd.
Father and son combination Gary and Dustin Higgs, who have been the pacesetters in the first two rounds of the series, looked set for another epic showdown in the final after they shared the front row of the grid.
Dustin Higgs however would only last two laps before succumbing to oil pressure problems and retiring to the infield leaving Gary Higgs to lead away the restart from Mt Barker’s Chris Pavlovich and Damon Trouchet.
Just two laps later a Bert Vosbergen spin in which Warren Hambley and Paul Oakley got caught up in, caused the third race stoppage of the final.
Vosbergen and Oakley were both retired from the event with damage cars while Pavlovich joined them on the infield after overheating issues in his machine.
With 21 laps still to run, Gary Higgs led the restart away and quickly opened up a big advantage over the rest of the field, as Trouchet, Peter Lyall and Hambley fought out the minor placings.
There would be one more restart after Peter Wallinger spun his car with nine laps remaining but Gary Higgs easily negotiated those to go on and recorded an emphatic victory.
Gary Higgs finished 8.022 seconds ahead of Trouchet at the finish, Hambley was third home but little separated him and Trouchet at the line.
However post-race Hambley was penalised for passing on the infield during the event and he was relegated two positions, dropping him to fifth in the official results as Lyall jumped to third and Tony St Jack fourth.
Glenn Smith, Darren Larson and Peter Wallinger rounded out the top eight finishers.
The casualties in the main event were Kevin Bell (13 laps), Kyle Larson (11), Pavlovich (4), Vosbergen (4), Oakley (4), Wayne Coleman (4), Dustin Higgs (2) and Tristen Green (2).
Earlier in the evening Gary Higgs and Dustin Higgs won two heat races each and the other preliminary events went to Trouchet and Lyall.
In the support divisions Gary Pow won an exciting limited sprintcars class from Shayne Langdon and Paul Belfield, Paul Colmer topped the street stock standings, Jake Blight claimed the production sedans while Sam Jewell (formula 125s) and Steve Beres (modified sedans) were also triumphant.
